ABOUTDaniel Baylis is a creator of many latitudes. A published author, poet, and photographer, his work has always been defined by the road: whether hiking 1,000 kilometres across the Middle East, cycling 5,000 kilometres across India, planting trees to pay for school, or herding baby goats. But while words were his first public medium, music was his first language. After earning a diploma in Music Composition in Edmonton, Baylis found himself "creatively adrift" from song for nearly two decades. He channeled his storytelling into books like The Traveller and the vulnerability of poetry, eventually earning praise from Harvard’s Christopher Germer as a "poet laureate of mindful self-compassion."Yet, the music remained a quiet, unfinished conversation.Everything shifted on a lighthouse. Seeking the silence necessary to reconnect with creativity, Baylis spent three months as a "relief light keeper" with the Canadian Coast Guard on the remote, rugged coastline of British Columbia. Sequestered on an island at the edge of the world with only a guitar for company, the songs finally arrived. The result is a debut album that feels like a homecoming 20 years in the making. Produced by Matthew Rogers (FLEECE) and mixed by Marcus Paquin, the album was recorded entirely in Montreal’s Mile End. Sonically, it sits in the evocative space between Leonard Cohen’s lyrical weight and Lana Del Rey’s cinematic atmosphere. With warm, fragile vocals and the "garbled" acoustic textures reminiscent of Feist, the album features a curated ensemble of Montreal talent.
