TRAVEL: THE INSIDE SCOOP ON 2011

It’s official. Starting in January, I will be spending one year traveling the world. This is your official invitation to join me via the wonders of the world wide web.

Here’s some background information on the trip I am envisioning…

The Vision: To spend 2011 traveling; I seek to gain knowledge of cultures and communities, and relay my experiences to those who are interested in joining the adventure online. It is a form of experiential blogging and documenting, where self-reflection is a large portion of the featured content. I intend to share my experiences through short text-based articles (on this blog), and also through photography and short video segments.

The Framework: I have conceptualized an outline that consists of visiting twelve countries, one for each month of the year. The specific geographic locations are less important than the opportunity for community engagement. For the sake of a complete worldly experience, I will be seeking host communities on the six populated continent (my regrets to Antarctica).

The Challenge: To travel via a system of ‘trades’ or ‘sweat equity.’ As a young writer, I have little to offer financially. Instead I have a strong back, an eager disposition and set of experiences that might be of assistance to a community of people. My current task is to connect with people and organizations that might be willing to host an individual for one month in 2011.

Stay tuned. The adventure begins January 1, 2011.

Have you seen the book – work your way around the world? It has amazing suggestions for work exchanges, seasonal jobs to make cash for the next leg, and volunteer opportunities to help you connect with communities. I can’t wait to follow your adventures!

@Liz – I’ve seen various books out there about working around the world. I’ll have to track down some titles and send some titles/authors your way!

Awesome! You should write something for Matador about it…

@Christine – Yeah. Would like to do a mid-trip report saying, “this is what I’ve done and this is what I still have left to do.”

Try hospitalityclub.org for accommodations–it’s a more progressively-focused version of Couchsurfer. I’ve used them, and it’s great!

Where are the clauses that dictate what you will and won’t do for survival ?
