LETTER HOME: THAT’S ALL I HAVE TO SAY

Dear Family and Friends,

I write you from a rainy Sunday night in Edinburgh. It’s been a busy week of volunteerism at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival.

As I mentioned in the quick summary of my August host, my official role for the month is that of “Broadcast Liaison” for the Pleasance Theatre Company. It is a demanding volunteer position where I coordinate the photo/filming/broadcasting requests of journalists and other media peoples with PR agents and venue managers. Essentially 90% of my task is ensuring that information is relayed.

I’m just a wee Canadian messenger in this massive comedy machine.

(Note how I’ve started to incorporate some Scottish dialect into my phrases.)

I was talking to my sister today about how my week, albeit quite hectic, lacked any sort of major trauma that bodes well for reflection. I didn’t get scammed by Peruvian men. There were no bedbugs munching my forearms. You ain’t gonna hear any stories about men accosting me and stealing my iPod. BOR-ING!

Instead it was a quiet week of administrative tasks in an office.

And after the working hours were over, my life didn’t suddenly get more exotic. I spent Saturday night cooking myself a nice meal with a bit of Chet Baker playing in the background. I skyped a friend, plucked my eyebrows, drank half a bottle of red wine and then spooned with a pillow until I drifted off into a drooly comatose state of sleep.

That’s exactly what I needed. Something unexciting. Something that was familiar to my everyday existence back home.

And that’s all I have to say.

xoxo

Daniel
