SONG FROM THE ROAD: SERENATAS DE GUANACASTE
Unlike many Central American nations, such as Cuba or Mexico, Costa Rica’s population never developed a signature rhythm or style that became a major part of the country’s popular music. But that doesn’t mean that Costa Rica is short on talented musicians or romantic songwriting.
Al Pie Del Balcón (The Foot of the Balcony) is a compilation of Costa Rican folk serenades – a mixture of poetry, Ecuadorian pasillos and Mexican boleros. The style is a cultural fusion, arriving to the Guanacaste province by way of travelling circuses and radio airwaves.
“Four experienced singers were reunited after decades in order to reminess anecdotes and songs that they used to play during the golden age of romantic serenades. They used to walk the streets of the Northmost Costa Rican province with their guitars slung over their shoulders, seeking women for whom to sing their songs beneath balconies. This was a deeply- rooted tradition last century, when all romantic stories began, were formalized and ended with a handful of songs.”
This compilation is perfect for those who fell in love with Buena Vista Social Club, but who are ready to delve into something different.
