IMPROVING THE HEALTH OF MEN

I salute the mustache.

And I salute the men who are interested in shedding light on prostate cancer through growing a mustache for Movember.

Fellas, we need to be able to talk about our health, whether that’s physical, mental or emotional, and I think Movember is a step in the right direction towards opening up a conversation on personal health.

With that in mind, I wanted to get a quick conversation going.

For each person who leaves a comment on this blog post with a male health tip – physical, mental or emotional – I will donate $1 to Prostate health. All funds will be shared between the Movember fundraising efforts of two of my favorite mustachioed comrades: My friend Pascal and my brother-in-law Ryan.

Details:

- Only one comment per person will be counted.

- I’ve set a maximum donation limit of $1000 (a boy needs to save some money to eat)

- The deadline to comment is noon (9 PM EST) on Tuesday, November 30, 2010

- This is not just for men! All sexes/genders are encouraged to comment!

- Share this with your friends on Facebook and Twitter, prostates everywhere will rejoice!

Check the testicles while showering every month or so. Best when soaping them up and can feel each between your fingers for any hardness or lumps. When you’re done you can check your own too ;)

Add soy, green tea, and tomatoes, into your diet

Eat a lot of broccoli, just don’t boil it. Great for vitamin C and potent anti-cancer properties.

Mental health tip: Rather than trying to change other people ask yourself: how might I modify my own behavior in order to achieve the results I am seeking. It’s much less stressful to try and control ourselves than to try and control others.

I’m always teaching myself about my health. Health is funny in that we tend to be really hard on ourselves in our minds, and yet not hard enough in our daily routines.

Let’s meet ourselves half-way and be gentler in our minds and harder on our bodies (so to speak).

I like to reward myself through action, like: I can’t wait to see me do this impossible-sounding thing. I can’t wait to see myself walk all the way home from the brunch so far out of town that everybody I’ve ever known has taken the train. I can’t wait to see what I look like after flinging myself all over the gym at 3:00 a.m. just because I was awake and curious. I can’t wait to try a week of meals based entirely on canned spinach and eggs, just so I can annoy people at parties with the story about he one time I did it, and the color my teeth turned.

Everybody has their own challenges waiting inside, that I bet they secretly can’t wait to undertake. Doing these things within the boundaries of safety and moderation is what makes us adults, male, happy, and alive.

    # of Ejaculation:

“More frequent ejaculation also may decrease a man’s risk of prostate cancer.” [ One study showed that men who ejaculated five times a week in their 20s had a decreased rate of prostate cancer, though other studies have shown no benefit. ]

    Diet:

Vegetarian: The American Dietetic Association and Dieticians of Canada report a decreased incidence of prostate cancer for those following a vegetarian diet.

Low-carb : In lab tests on mice, prostate tumors grow slower with a no-carbohydrate diet.

Coffee: A preliminary study found a correlation between coffee consumption and a lower risk of aggressive prostate cancer.

    Balls:

Yes, as Jeffery mentioned, check your balls every now and then.

    Finally, exercise!

I hope you all stay well.

    Love,
    S

Did you know that Kegel exercises are also good for men? Sex and the City may have popularized this type of exercise for women, but I recently found out that it’s great for les boys, also! While its overall benefits include the oh-so sought after sexual benefits, let’s not forget it can also help other aspects of your health as well. Aren’t ya just a little curious now?? So go ahead and look it up!

    Cheers :)

(On a personal note) My dad begrudgingly had an exam done (he’s of “that” generation…but my mom forced him) and they did discover what turned out to be prostate cancer. Because it was in the early stages, he was able to have his prostate removed and has been cancer free for nearly 4 years. My grandpa wasn’t so fortunate…it had spread by the time he knew something was wrong. Don’t leave it to your husbands, wives, moms, dads, lovers or partners to keep on top of your health. Take a stand on your own and prevent the heartbreak of losing a loved one…you.

Get the check up. Once a year. Once you hit 35, do the bloodwork annually, too. And BE HONEST with your doctor. Or don’t bother going.

Get enough sleep. Longer duration of sleep is associated with a lower risk of prostate (and many other) cancers.

Crap. Did I miss the deadline?

Here’s my tip. It’s the truth. If you’re not gonna do it for yourself, then please. Do it for me.

Eating vegetables and plenty of exercise while growing up, can add an additional 4 inches to a mans final penis size.
