SEPTEMBER HOST: GOATS WITH THE WIND

In this week’s Letter Home, I made my case on why I have chosen to visit Israel. Some of these reasons included the desire to gain a first-hand account of the nation, to engage with the people and to hopefully form a more informed and sensitive analysis.

But let’s be clear, it really is all about the goats.

Goats are pretty rad things (click for evidence), and for many years I’ve been profitting from their products. Three cheers for goat cheese!

So when my Israeli friend, Jonathan, told me about a magical place where folks could learn about goats by volunteering at a farm called “Goats With the Wind,” I did an internal cartwheel. Not only was it a place that aligned perfectly with the principals of my voyage, but it had a stellar name. Reminiscent of my own indigenous identity, Dances With WiFi.

So today I shall voyage to the farm, and begin my weeks as a goat whisperer.

And if you don’t hear from me, fret not. You’ll get the whole story at the end of the month.

EXPECTATIONS:

- To learn more about goats, such as how to milk them, make cheese, harvest their hair for magical potions

- To possibly sleep in a tipi (see photo)

- To take a break from WiFi (I’m unsure if a connection exists at the farm)

- To have conversations about what it means to be Israeli

- To tour parts the nation and hopefully visit Nazareth, Jerusalem & the Dead Sea (at the end of the month)
