I’m from Indianapolis, a true US I-Stater: born in Illinois, did time in Iowa, and have been in Indiana for far too long. But we have an amazing quality of life for our low cost of living which then makes travel to other places much more manageable.

I think I found your blog from a message the Angels delivered to me in my sleep … or was it on one of those stone tablets brought down from the mountain? No, seriously, it was via Joe.My.God.

I dream of traveling to Iceland. Obviously because it begins with I, but also because I have few preconceptions about the people or the terrain, and I think it would be nice to go somewhere with that state of mind.

    Now where’s my postcard?

I am from England, and live in the beaaauutiful county of Northamptonshire.

I found your blog after you told me to look at it! So not really found… kind of placed on my lap really.. not that i regret having ‘found’ it!

I dream of travelling to New Zealand, because it is so far away… and its on the one continent i have yet to travel to. And i’m a Lord of the Rings fan, so that would be just amazingly cool, oh and i love the accent. I’d also love to return to South Americaaaa, and see a lil’ bit more than just Peru, and just SEE everything. I wish i could travel all the time… oh yes and of course i would love to see Canada one day!

Daniel! I’m from Caracas, Venezuela. You should had visited my country while you were travelling in South America. I <3 <3 <3 your blog and every time I can I told my friends to read your posts (I think the first note I read was Lessons from my 30's).

I want to visit other countries in South America but I'm moving to Spain around october so… I guess Europe will be first! ;)

    Greetings from Caracas!

Hi Daniel, I was with my friend Chrissy from Neve last night and we were talking about how much guts you have to do this trip. Every time I see your videos, I tell my self I should go to that place to. I really look forward to see what South Africa is like.
For the first time in a while, I have no major trip ahead of me, but I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by travel ideas everyday.

    Cheers.

I am from Vancouver Island, Lake Cowichan actually.. old logging town… small, quiet, and far from my office job in Victoria. I have NO idea how I found you, I have been going through your site since last night, this is day 2 of checking it out. Of course last night I had a few wine so could only watch the video blogs.. reading was a tad challenging. So I guess that also answers why I have NO clue how I found you. Glad I did, enjoying your entries.
I am 40+ years old and have only travelled outside of Canada once for a week to Bahamas.. I don’t remember much other than the hotel, and loved the beach. I was never one to get on a plane.. talk about terror. Well somehow I have gotten it in my noggin that I absolutley MUST travel, I don’t really care where, although I would love to see Guatamala and the ruins there. Vietnam has gotten me really interested, but I may just have to start with road trip across Canada. I just need to start wandering.
Enjoy Africa… Yes I would like to visit there also.

I’m from Scotland, in the not-so-spectacular dog’s head just north of Edinburgh (that wasn’t a metaphor: look at a map) we call Fife. I’m 18.

I found this blog when I realised one evening that I liked airports. I do like airports. I like them enough to tell google that I like airports, and that was when I found your video “I Like Airports”, with a link to your website in the description.

I’m learning to speak German at the moment, so there would be my first destination. Having made a small start on Russian, I’d probably end up there as well. But I’d also like to visit Canada, the U.S, Australia, Scandinavia, China, Japan, South Korea and plenty of other places too. I might even find it within myself to learn some language as I go.

A homage to Caracus would be in order for secret reasons only a Scotsman would understand. Something about the ratio of women to men there.

It’s everyone’s dream to do what you’re doing, and the wonderful thing is is that it’s something everyone can do. With hope you’ll inspire some people to do it, wherever it is they want to go.

Just want to thank you for your website and all good informations you provide here ! Thanks from France.

  27. Emily 28 November 2011 at 9:05 AM #

My name is Emily, and I am from Boston but now I live in Beijing with my family. I found your blog through another blogger (can’t remember which, but she’s from San Francisco!). In somewhat chronological order, or rather geographical order, I dream of traveling around China where my ancestors’ spirits remain (I admit I have only recently begun to wonder about my ancestors), Tibet because it’s beautiful, Southeast Asia which has been a priority for years now (and now there’s a highway connecting Thailand to China!), and India rich in culture and spices (I love curry!). On my way back to the west (I plan on returning to Brooklyn, where I lived for the past 3 years, eventually), I’d like to stop in Eastern Europe (countries to be decided as I read more blogs), skip the west and head south to West Africa and make my way down to Capetown. Then when I’m back in the western hemisphere, I will visit the rest of Central America (I’ve been to Guatemala) and Latin America, specifically Chile and Argentina. I realize I might’ve just named most of the world but a girl can dream!

    Hello fellow gypsy!

I’m from the US, via Nigeria and Bangladesh, and I’ve just returned from 7 years of travelling. I don’t have any particular travel bugs right now – I’m dying to stay put for a while. But if someone gave me a free ticket to the town I grew up in (Nsukka in southeastern Nigeria), as well as security detail getting there, I wouldn’t say no :)

I got to your blog through your VSL guest editor bit (and googling), and of course I had to read it, for so many resonating reasons. I’ve learned many of your lessons the hard beautiful long way home. And your writing is super fun and funny and I hope you keep doing it.

Here’s to people being inspired to get out there.

    :)

    Daniel,

I’m in awe of your blog and overwhelmed by all that it has to offer. It makes my fledgling blog look like a 2nd-grader’s class project (on which they got a C+ at best.) I stumbled across your site doing some rudimentary research on the costs involved in traveling the world for a year (you’re the top result for a a basic google search of “how much to travel for a year.”)

I’ve been actively traveling for about 5 years now and just returned from over two weeks in India (an experience I’m still wrapping my head around.) I love Chicago, but I’ve noticed that since I’ve gotten back, there’s a big part of me that’s just not here anymore. I think it and I got separated at a train station in Jaipur and I feel compelled to get out there and (slowly and leisurely) find it. …I also think I’m having a very early mid-life crisis. (I’ll be 40… in 2 and a half years.)

There are certainly obstacles to pulling off a fear similar to yours, but they are by no means insurmountable. I look forward to exploring your site further and learning of your experiences from your year of travel. You, sir, rock.

      Hey Damon,

Thanks so much for your sweet words! I’m happy/honored that you’ve found me.

I hope you’re able to track down that part of you that’s gone missing! Have you checked Tasmania? Or Honduras? Or maybe even Iceland? It could be anywhere, I suppose.

Best of luck navigating your early mid-life crisis. I hear that whiskey helps.

If I can be of any assistance, feel free to reach out via email.

      Cheerio,

      Daniel

I’m Dan and a teacher living in San Francisco, Ca. Love to travel. A baby boomer and soon to be empty nester. I’ve had my travel addiction since a young age – my dad used to take me on business trips to NYC. Then when I was 14 I went to France for the summer to stay with family friends – drink wine and saw x rated movies -). After graduating high school, I took a greyhound from LA to New York City. In 1980 I took a hippie bus ride from San Francisco to Cancun – lost 15 pounds but gained a real view of Mexico, Did Peace Corps in Honduras in early 80s and clearly established my wanderlust. Fast forward 30 years – daughter just turned 18. Wife open to changing locale. Same condo 20 years, same teaching job 5 – too old for the hostel route and too young for senior tour. Ultimate dream – teaching job overseas – interviewed for Abu Dhabi position last month – but not recommended – maybe too old or too experienced -). Anyway, nice website and looks like nice people on line as well.
